This session presents foundational thinking skills critical to students' ability to "do STEM" well: divergent, convergent, analytical, evaluative, and visual-spatial thinking. Each thinking skill is addressed and connected to STEM contexts. Activities are demonstrated which allow students to apply each thinking strand in STEM subjects, activities, and problems.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the five critical thinking skills (divergent, convergent, evaluative, analytical, visual-spatial) that are foundational to success in STEM.
Demonstrate activities that connect direct instruction in thinking skills to STEM activities and instruction.
Gain practical ideas that teachers can implement in their classrooms to improve student metacognition.
