Recent attention to the science of reading has brought increased focus to the importance of phonics in beginning reading skills. What does this mean for talented early readers? This session examines the implications of the focus on phonics for students who excel at reading. Strategies for differentiating within a scientifically-based initial reading program are shared.

Participants will examine the effects of increased attention toward phonics and phonemic awareness.
Participants will determine possible assessments that can be used to show students’ proficiency with phonics and phonemic awareness for use in compacting.
Participants will explore how alternative scientifically-based activities can be provided to challenge talented readers.
