Underachievement often bedevils parents and teachers, who see a gifted child’s many capabilities but are frustrated by lack of performance, motivation, or ambition. Once understood, underachievement is a condition that can be addressed to improve a gifted child’s performance through purposeful strategies, interventions, and supports. This session examines how to identify underachievers and ways to reverse that condition.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will be able to define what gifted underachievement is, know how it differs from underachievement in the general population, and identify some of its root causes.
Attendees will be able to to identify gifted underachievers and some underlying reasons for underperformance.
Attendees will be able to create a plan to alter behaviors causing underachievement and improve the gifted student’s performance. If appropriate, attendees will be able to include parents in this.
