Ability grouping can affect many aspects of students' school experience. In this session we present a new meta-analysis of 54 state-of-the-art studies to address questions such as: Does ability grouping promote or hinder students’ academic achievement and psychosocial development? Do the effects differ for varied initial achievement or ability level or by type of grouping, dosage, or instructional time?

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain a more accurate estimation of ability grouping’s effectiveness built upon a cohort of recent studies that employed advanced econometrics and statistical techniques such as hierarchical linear modeling techniques.
