How can you best identify/serve English Language Learners (ELLs) in gifted programs? The presenter directed SOL Net (Speakers of Other Languages NETwork), a Javits grant that began gifted services for ELLs. Participants receive research-based suggestions and legal implications/cautions for gifted identification and services for emerging multilingual students. Emphasis is paid to the recruitment of teachers from diverse populations.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will become familiar with relevant gifted ELL legislation, laws, and legal cases to serve as precautionary tales for making good choices in identification and services.
Participants will be provided menus of gifted ELL identification and service options as well as cautions when selecting appropriate tools or services.
Participants will be provided suggestions to help with: (1) recruiting/utilizing teachers from diverse backgrounds and (2) incorporating differentiated Curriculum Unit Plans (CUPs) in language arts and math.
