For decades, data reveal a disturbing reality: Blacks and Hispanics are inequitably underrepresented in gifted education and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Biases in instruments and educators' deficit thinking are fundamental gatekeepers that keep programs extensively White despite the student population being mostly non-White. The presenter shares a dozen equity-based, anti-racist, culturally-responsive recommendations for increasing the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students.
Learning Objectives:
The audience will understand factors that contribute to underrepresentation for Black and Hispanic students. This includes learning how to set equity ranges for both groups.
Participant will understand several equitable, anti-racist, and culturally-responsive ways to recruit and retain students of color in gifted education, AP, honors, etc.
The audience will become familiar with theories and frameworks to understand and decrease prejudice and discrimination toward students of color.
