What can a classroom teacher do to support English learners (ELs) in gifted classrooms? By understanding the basics of second language acquisition, gifted teachers can support ELs in their journey towards critical thinking, deeper thinking, and language and content learning. Strategies from the field of second language learning can enhance gifted education to include ELs in gifted programming.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will articulate why ELs can and should be part of gifted programming by engaging in activities that emphasize an asset mind-frame.
Participants will evaluate high-impact teaching strategies from second language acquisition that allow ELs to participate in the gifted classroom.
Participants will practice strategies for building language alongside content to create opportunities for ELs to be included in advanced thinking and learning.
