Students who are experiencing poverty continue to be an underrepresented population in AIG programming. In this session we explore common stereotypes or misconceptions about social class as it relates to parental goals for children. This session promotes asset-based thinking and evaluation of common stereotypes about parents of students experiencing poverty.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will learn strategies to build relationships with the families of gifted students experiencing poverty in a more asset-based and approachable way.
Attendees will understand that while families of students who are experiencing poverty may not be as visible in schools, they also have high academic goals for their children.
