Exposure to and familiarity with the arts permit gifted children to gain creative and critical thinking skills. Exposing gifted learners to discipline-based practices — composition, aesthetic percipience, and processes and techniques — better permits children to understand how and why creators make decisions and whether they agree with those decisions. This session provides instructional strategies, curricular materials, and other ideas that teachers and parents can use.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will know that state learning standards, whether the Core Content Standards or others, support engagement with the arts and the development of creative and critical thinking skills.
Attendees will be able to use a variety of instructional approaches, such as Visual Thinking Strategies and Shared Inquiry, to explore the arts.
Attendees will be better able to make connections between the arts and English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and to create units centered on the arts.
