LGBTQ+ related shootings at Orlando's 2016 Pulse Nightclub and the school murders at Parkland, Florida’s Stoneman Douglas High School both exacerbated long-existing stressors in gifted LGBTQ+ and allied youth. Similarly, Florida’s and other states' recent “Don’t Say Gay” laws have intensified existing fear and isolation among these students. Hear about longstanding public policy causes for these stressors, recent events intensifying student apprehensions, and past and present humanitarian and policy solutions for making LGBTQ+ students feel more supported.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will learn three ways in which gifted LGBTQ+ youth can be socially and emotionally affected by inadequate state policies on both school harassment and gun usage.
Attendees will learn how one state's public policies on school harassment and guns have produced harmful social-emotional health effects on LGBTQ+ students, including gifted LGBTQ+ youth.
Attendees will describe three pieces of school-harassment and gun-safety legislation that have made things better, in one state’s schools and communities, for LGBTQ+, especially gifted LGBTQ+, youth.
