Being neurodivergent comes with a wide range of unique sensory sensitivities. Sensory needs are intricately tied to emotional regulation and executive functions; however, this connection is frequently missed. Understanding these sensory needs (from all eight - yes, eight! - sensory systems) is key to providing a classroom environment that allows gifted and Twice-Exceptional students to thrive.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will demonstrate an understanding of how hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity to sensory input can impact a student's ability to learn, think, regulate emotions, and communicate.
Attendees will understand how certain diagnoses such as ADHD and autism can influence one's ability to integrate sensory stimuli.
Attendees will explore the characteristics of the eight sensory systems: gustatory, tactile, visual, auditory, olfactory, proprioceptive, interoceptive, and vestibular.
