The procedures and methods used to identify gifted students must be understood from historical and research perspectives to achieve equity. The evidence on race and ethnic differences across intelligence tests are examined in this session. Psychometric bias and equitable assessment are described. We show that equitable intelligence tests measure how well a person can think — not what they know.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the historical underpinnings of the most widely used intelligence tests and how their limitations have limited equitable identification of gifted students
Define the difference between psychometric test bias and equity as described in the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing
Identify intelligence test items that reflect how well a person can think to solve problems rather than what a person knows
