Gilman W. Whiting, Ph.D. (Purdue University), serves Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee in many capacities. He is a Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of African American and Diaspora Studies; Director of the Scholar Identity Institute, and Black Male Initiative; and the founding chair of the Achievement Gap Institute at the George W. Peabody College of Education.
Dr. Whiting's areas of research include Black student achievement, educational disparity; special and gifted education; sociology of race, sports, and American culture; research methods, and fatherhood initiatives.
Dr. Whiting has authored numerous scholarly articles in the field of gifted education published in journals such as Gifted Child Quarterly, Roeper Review, and Journal for Secondary Gifted Education. Other areas include The International Journal of Sport and Society and the Conversation. He is a co-editor for Black Masculinity Revisited, a book on manliness, and has authored several other book chapters.
Dr. Whiting created the Scholar Identity Modelâ„¢, a psycho-social model to assist whole communities in rethinking ways to combat academic apathy, along with equity in GATE & educator training. He consults with school districts and programs both nationally and internationally.
