Teacher and Coordinator of Gifted Education (K-8)
Schuylkill Valley School District, Pennsylvania
Dr. Elizabeth Schucker has been teaching for 19 years and has enjoyed a variety of roles in education. She treasured her work as a fourth-grade regular education classroom teacher for 15 years, focusing on student differentiation, especially with high achieving students in math and reading. Dr. Schucker now serves as the district's K-8 Gifted Teacher. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Reading, a master’s degree in Reading with a Reading Specialist Certificate, both from Kutztown University, and a doctoral degree through Kutztown University’s Education Doctorate in Transformational Teaching and Learning in Education, supported by the Carnegie Consortium. Dr. Schucker, along with her dedicated elementary colleagues, were the proud recipients of the 2018 ILA Award for Excellence in Literacy Instruction in Pennsylvania. Dr. Schucker was also awarded the Panther Impact Award in 2016 and 2018, nominated by past students for her mentorship and influence in their lives. Dr. Schucker's doctoral research journey explored how student participation in social justice-themed book clubs cultivated critical civic identity and motivation to become change agents within their communities. This journey was hilighted in Dr. Schucker's authored chapter for an edited collection, Teaching Challenged and Challenging Topics in Diverse and Inclusive Literature: Addressing the Taboo in the English Classroom, (Routledge, 2023). Dr. Schucker continues to explore the criticality of agency-based activism within the gifted classroom through various project and problem-based learning opportunities that use students' gifts in ways that apply and relate to real-world challenges. Dr. Schucker is passionate about programming within the gifted classroom and continues to apply curricular framework that is focused on engaging student partners who 'co-pilot' together as leaders and empowered citizens.
