Phd Student: Educational Psychology with Gifted Education Focus

Debi K. Torres is a doctoral student in the Baylor University Educational Psychology’s Gifted and Talented Program and is the Director of Professional Learning for Baylor's Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development. She was honored with the 2022 Administrator of the Gifted Award by the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented (TAGT). Debi has extensive experience working with gifted children and their families and teachers as a former teacher and Gifted Education Coordinator for the Austin Independent School District. Austin, Texas has experienced some of the fastest population growth across the nation resulting in an increasingly diverse student population. Debi’s capacity to innovate new ideas coupled with her passion for supporting underserved gifted students resulted in the percentage of Black and Hispanic GT students doubling in the past decade in Austin ISD. Debi was working in Austin ISD when they were awarded with a 2022 Jacob K. Javits Grant and has taken on the role of primary investigator for the grant as she continues with her doctoral program at Baylor University. Her research interests include underserved gifted students, talent development, parent outreach, and professional development. Debi has presented at NAGC, SENG, and TAGT conferences and is passionate about collaborating, researching, and advocating for underserved gifted children and their families.
