As Director of Fine and Performing Arts his primary focus on arts for the exceptional shifted from student with disabilities to students with exceptional artistic talent. With the realization that the artistically gifted ARE "special needs" students, protocols were developed to identify giftred students in dance, instrumental muisc, theatre, visual art and vocal music. A 15-day auditioned summer intensive was created for grades three through eight. With the success of the summer program, an auditiioned arts magnet school was created for grades six through eight. With the identification of artistically gifted students and special programs created for them, a glaring need became evident, Faculty in the programs were not prepared to teach the artistically gifted. In 2012, through the state department of eduation, he developed and began teaching two graduate summer institutes for arts teachers: (1) Nature and Needs of the Artistically Gifted and Talented; (2) Curriculum and Instruction for the Artistically Gifted and Talented. It is from the arts faculties observaional research attending the institutes that this presention is based.
