Michael S. Matthews, Ph.D. is Professor and Director of the Academically & Intellectually Gifted M.Ed. concentration at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He previously has served as Co-Editor of Gifted Child Quarterly and on the Board of the National Association for Gifted Children. Dr. Matthews has served as Chair of the SIG—Research on Giftedness, Creativity, and Talent of the American Educational Research Association and also on the boards of two public schools for high-ability learners and for two state-level gifted education associations. He currently is a board member with CEC-TAG. His research addresses assessment and identification of gifted children; education policy; science learning; motivation and underachievement; and parenting, including homeschooling, of gifted learners. His scholarship also focuses on gifted and academically advanced learners from diverse backgrounds, particularly English learners. Dr. Matthews is author or editor of six books, more than 50 academic journal articles, and numerous book chapters. His work has been recognized with the NAGC Early Scholar Award, the Michael Pyryt Collaboration Award, and the Legacy Award for Best Scholarly Book from the Texas Association for the Gifted & Talented.
