Dr. Ophélie Allyssa Desmet is an Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology and Program Coordinator for the Center for Gifted Studies at Valdosta State University. Dr. Desmet earned her Doctorate in Educational Psychology with a focus on Gifted, Creative, and Talented Studies from Purdue University. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Educational Sciences from KU Leuven, Belgium. Her research investigates social, emotional, and motivational aspects of talent development and thus intervenes in the long-standing paradigm of cognitive development as the central tenet of gifted education. In particular, her work focuses on understanding the complex phenomenon of underachievement among underrepresented students and establishing successful interventions to prevent and resolve underachievement.
