Head of School
Arete Academy, Minnesota
Max Melby is the Head of School at Arete Academy, an independent school in Minneapolis, MN serving 2e and neurodiverse learners since 2014. Between 2014 and 2019, Max held a number of roles at Arete, including science teacher, program coordinator, emergency and safety coordinator, the person who fixed things so we didn’t have to call maintenance and reveal just how good 2e kids can be at accidentally destroying property, custodian, and more… anything to help the school improve! Max took over leadership of Arete in the 2019-2020 school year, which ensured that he had ample opportunities to learn and grow into the leader he is today (it’s unclear whether this is an optimistic perspective, euphemism, or a cautionary tale- stay tuned for updates).
Max keeps coming back to Arete year after year because it provides him the opportunity to do work that matters. It is incredibly meaningful to see a group of students whose needs are often partially or completely unmet grow into themselves and reach higher potentials. Likewise, it’s rewarding to see a group of educators with diverse backgrounds turn Arete into a home where they can teach in meaningful ways. Max looks forward to seeing the long-term impacts that school and program development will have on the gifted, 2e, and neurodiverse communities in the Twin Cities. He has been honored to participate in the broader professional 2e community, supporting the development of higher education programs, such as those at the Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity in Education and the Twice-Exceptional Teacher Education Program at Cleveland State University.
