Associate Director
Indigenous Students Leap Ahead (ISLA) Project, Colorado
Steven C. Haas is a passionate advocate for instructional techniques that are respectful of the traditional visual-spatial learning style of 80% of Native American children. The natural synergy of culturally responsive instruction with culturally responsive curricular content opens the door to strength-based programming and instruction, replacing the frustration of endless auditory-sequential remediation and catch-up.
Mr. Haas, as a Founding Member and Associate Director of the Indigenous Students Leap Ahead (ISLA) Project, works with teachers and staff in schools and school districts serving American Indian and Alaska Native children on and off reservations and in urban settings, and with the tribal educational offices supporting that education.
Mr. Haas serves as Director for the Visual-Spatial Learners Project and coordinates the ongoing development and validation of the Visual-Spatial Identifier©. The VSI© has been validated for 3rd-9th grade mainstream children and Hispanic children (2003), Navajo children in Page AZ (2007), and Northern Arapaho children (2015). Mr. Haas has worked as a Native American education consultant, school administrator, middle school principal, education researcher, Advanced Placement instructor, classroom teacher, and mentor.
Recent publications include co-authored chapters on “Teaching to Their Strengths: Good Medicine for Native American Education” in Gifted Children of Color Around the World (2016) and “Engaging Different Types of Gifted Learners” in Applied Practice for Educators of Gifted and Able Learners (2015).
Mr. Haas is a frequent presenter on the learning characteristics and instructional needs of Native American children at the NIEA, NASAI, Johnson-O’Malley Association, Wallace Symposium, NAGC, and WCGTC. He was a keynote speaker at the Wyoming Indian Education Conference and has presented on Indian education issues in Washington DC to twelve Senate and House committees and subcommittees and their staffs, and also was an invited speaker at the Tribal Leaders Educational Roundtable in Rapid City SD (2012).
