Javits Grant Teacher Coach

Dr. Martha Lopez is the Javits Grant Teacher Coach at the Milwaukee Public School District in Wisconsin where she coaches over 200 GT educators across 27 schools in her district. Since 2000, she has been involved in three US Department of Education Javits Grants that have been awarded to MPS. Throughout this time, she has worked in urban education as an advocate for educational equality, bilingual education, and gifted and talented learners. Dr. Lopez expanded her advocacy for gifted and talented learners while she served as a board of directors for the Wisconsin Association for Talented & Gifted (WATG). In addition, she has given numerous workshops, statewide and nationally, on the identification and instructional strategies for gifted learners, particularly for underrepresented populations. In her free time, she translates newsletter articles for WATG to provide access for Spanish-speaking families to quality information on topics of giftedness. She earned her doctorate in Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her dissertation was on the parental academic socialization and consejos of Latino parents raising middle school gifted children.
