Gifted Program Teacher
York Catholic District School Board, Ontario, Canada
Craig Phillips has been working with gifted/high ability learners in York region (a suburb of Toronto, Canada) for twenty-three years, primarily in a congregated setting. Aside from his work in the classroom, Craig has also coordinated the Legislative Page Program in Ontario, where throughout the year, high achieving middle school students are chosen from across the province to spend a month working and learning alongside lawmakers in the Legislature. These students learn first-hand about the legislative process and get a comprehensive look at democracy in action. Craig is passionate about engaging youth in the democratic process and teaching about civic responsibility. The ideas being presented in “Civics & Democracy: Engaging our Best and Brightest” come from years of teaching civics to high school and middle school students, along with the experience of creating and implementing hands-on curriculum in the provincial legislature. As a teacher-leader, Craig has been involved with several initiatives, including writing/designing curriculum in his district, mentoring new teachers, and presenting workshops on a variety of topics in schools and at conferences.
