Andrea Hughs-Baird, Ph.D. is the founder of STAR: Strive for Thriving Advocacy and Resources consulting firm. Her research interests include gifted and talented education, systems thinking in education settings, and pre-K-12 education policy. Dr. Hughs-Baird holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in Applied Mathematics, with an emphasis in Operations Research. She holds a M.Ed. and Ph.D. from the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) in Educational Leadership with emphasis in Gifted and Talented Education. She completed the university courses required for teacher endorsement in gifted and talented education through UNR, the University of Iowa, the College of William and Mary, and the University of Connecticut. She has researched numerous topics in gifted and talented education while raising her three highly gifted, twice-exceptional children; specifically, gifted education methods and pedagogy, characteristics of highly gifted children and how to sustain academic engagement, gifted programming models, social-emotional issues and interventions, twice-exceptionality, and public policy regarding gifted education.
Dr. Hughs-Baird worked for seven years as a Project Controls Engineer for Fluor Daniel, an engineering and construction company, and for twelve years as a Game Designer for International Game Technology, a casino gaming company, during which time she received twenty patents. She was a non-paid lobbyist for six years, forming a 1000+ member grassroots community organization, Parent Leaders for Education, to lobby the Nevada state policy makers for increased funding and reforms for K-12 education and has volunteered for twelve years in leadership positions in organizations supporting gifted education. Dr. Hughs-Baird assisted the project evaluator on an NIH grant promoting Spanish-English bilingual students’ interest in pursuing and knowledge of STEM- healthcare education and careers. She has extensive background in project management, team and coalition building, and has experienced the tremendous benefits of quality gifted education through the experiences of her three children.
