Senior Director of Gifted and Talented Education

Valeria Jackson is a second-generation Detroit native and a graduate of Detroit Public Schools. She has four young adult children: Marissa Jackson-Sow, a law professor who specializes in international human rights law; Dorea, an exceptional education teacher (currently teaching at the Université de Lomé in Togo); Medvis, a community manager and business consultant, and Paul, a community organizer.
Dr. Jackson has a Ph.D. in Linguistics and was a World Language educator for over twenty-five years. She loves to travel and in addition to several visits to France, has visited Belgium, England, Liberia, Senegal, Jamaica, Haiti, and most recently Togo, W. Africa. In 2011 she led a group of high school students on a tour of France. She uses her firsthand cultural encounters to engage her students in an in-depth understanding of cultural, social, and environmental global issues.
After teaching gifted and talented students for many years at Cass Technical High Scholl and Renaissance High School, Dr. Jackson, has embraced the role of Senior Director of Gifted and Talented Education for Detroit Public Schools Community District. She is excited about the opportunity to provide access to high quality gifted and talented education within our district, especially for children who are underrepresented in gifted and talented programs. She views gifted, talented, and exceptional education programs that embrace children and families from all communities as key components to achieving justice and equity in our 21st century society.
