Dr. Carolyn M. Callahan, currently Commonwealth Professor of Education Emeritus at the University of Virginia, developed the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Gifted Education, teught classes in gifted education, and developed the Summer and Saturday Enrichment Programs at UVA. For more than 20 years she was principal investigator on projects of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented (NRC/GT) , was Co-PI for the National Center for Research in Gifted Education, and she has been principal investigator on six Javits grants including a grant focusing in on rural gifted students. Her work with the NRC/GT, NCRGE, and with the Javits projects has focused on curriculum development and implementation. As part of her work with the NRC/GT she was co-evaluator for the US Department of Education of the Javits program and conducted a national survey of gifted and talented programs. She has conducted evaluations of grant projects including several Javits grants, state level programs, and local level gifted programs. She has been recognized as Outstanding Professor of the Commonwealth of Virginia and Distinguished Scholar of the National Association for Gifted Children and has served as President of the National Association for Gifted Children and the Association for the Gifted, and as Editor of Gifted Child Quarterly. Dr. Callahan has published over 200 articles and 50 book chapters on topics in gifted education with one of those publications considered the definitive book on evaluation. She is the co-editor of the Critical Issues in Gifted Education.
