Teacher
Logos Lab School, Indiana
Roya Maze just completed her 24th year of teaching for Richmond Community Schools in Richmond, Indiana. While working on her master’s degree at Ball State University, she took a variety of courses for working with gifted students and developed a passion for gifted education. It was also during this time that her school district was restructuring and closing buildings. Working on the redistricting committee led her to aid in the design of a building serving students who needed special programming. The Logos Lab School was serving students in grades 6-8 housed at one of the two middle schools as a school within a school model. In 2012, the district reopened the Hibberd Building to house three separate programs, one of which was the Logos Program for identified high ability students. Housing the program at a separate building created the space to grow Logos to grades 3-8. Roya received her Gifted & Talented endorsement in 2013 from Ball State University. She has been working with gifted students at the elementary and middle school level since 2007. She is the Co-Lead High Ability Consultant for her district and a new board member for the Indiana Association for the Gifted. Whether you call it Passion Projects, Genius Hour, 20% Project, or, as we call it, Project Group, let my experiences of adapting and developing this cornerstone of our program for the enrichment of students help guide you in how to create time in your day for students to have ownership and control over their learning while exploring their passions.
