Alena Treat has a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with research in Gifted Education (minor in Instructional Systems Technology and emphasis on Research), a Master's degree in Gifted Education, and a BSE in Elementary Education (minor in Interpreting for the Deaf). She is currently employed as an online adjunct instructor for the University of Iowa and for Upper Iowa University.
Previously, Alena worked in gifted education in various capacities in both rural and urban school districts, a university (Assistant Professor in Teacher Education), a special education cooperative, magnet schools, and the Kansas State Department of Education (Director of a Javits grant). She has been on the U.S. Department of Education's Southeast Regional Advisory Committee where she represented gifted education for a five-state area. Alena has supervised and provided professional development to gifted teachers in Arkansas, Texas, and North Carolina, and has also supervised undergraduate and graduate teachers on the Navajo and Lakota Reservations as well as supervised student teachers in Iowa. Alena has written and directed a Javits grant, SOL Net (Soeakers of Other Languages Network, which started gifted programs for ELL students in Dallas and for Navajo and Ute on the Navajo Reservation in Utah. She has been Director of Academically and Intellectually Gifted Programs in a major school district in NC that had 183 schools and over 150 gifted teachers.
Dr. Treat has served as chair of the NAGC Diversity & Equity Committee and is presently the Social Chair of the NAGC LGBTQ+ Network.. She was previously appointed to NAGC's Gifted GLBT Task Force (1999-2005) and National Work Group on Gifted Sexually Diverse Students (2005-2009). Alena has also served as chair (twice) and vice chair (three times) of the NAGC Computers and Technology Division/Network and chair of the LGBTQ+ Network. She co-founded both networks.
