DEI Lead Practitioner, Music Teacher
Science & Arts Academy, Illinois
Beverly Preuss has been on the faculty of Science & Arts Academy since 2014 and brings over 30 years of experience in education to her work. She earned her bachelors in music education and vocal performance from Northwestern University and her masters in curriculum and instruction from National Louis University. Beverly teaches music to 4th-7th graders, chorus to 5th-8th graders, and is the music director for SAA’s musical productions. Additionally, Beverly serves as SAA’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) Lead Practitioner. In this role she co-chairs the DEI Committee and serves as a leader for the DEI Curriculum Working Group. Beverly champions professional development opportunities and curricular expectations through a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) lens, including New Teacher Orientation and mentorship of new faculty and staff. She has also recently joined a cohort of educators from across the United States in a program led by Learning for Justice, an educational section of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
In addition to her teaching experience, Beverly spent 5 years of her career running her own business in which she created educational assemblies about issues such as bullying, and tolerance. These assemblies were presented to a wide variety of schools in the Chicagoland area.
Outside of the work day, you can find Beverly in the theater directing and performing in shows, at home spending time with her family and two dogs, reading a good book, or planning and taking trips. Learning about human culture and telling stories through song and theater are lifelong joys for her.
