Carla Van Devander is an Assistant Professor and the Director of the Program for the Exceptionally Gifted at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, VA. She is a career educator with an MEd in Curriculum and Instruction and Instructional Strategies. She had the unique experience of teaching international students in Hastings, England at the beginning of her career. She was a classroom teacher for a number of years before becoming a Differentiation Specialist, with a focus on working with gifted and academically motivated students in grades 6-12. She has taught for Mary Baldwin’s School of Education for over 10 years, including offering coursework on instructional differentiation and exceptionalities. She has been selected by the Virginia Department of Education to represent Region V on the Virginia Advisory Committee for the Education of the Gifted (VACEG) and is serving her second 3-year term working with this group to provide guidance to the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Public Instruction about the educational needs of students identified as gifted in school divisions across the Commonwealth.
