District Gifted Coordinator Woodland Park School District, Colorado
It is time to rethink how bibliotherapy is presented to gifted students, educators, and counselors. This session begins with an overview and evolution of bibliotherapy in the field of gifted education, followed by the sharing of portraits of gifted adult readers as they reflect on their lives using Halstead’s Bibliotherapeutic Process — including identification, catharsis, insight, and universalization.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize how bibliotherapy is used by gifted readers over their lives, including their choice of literature and how they apply the literature to their lives.
Advocate for varied and appropriate fictional literature to address gifted students' social-emotional needs.
Support gifted students in engaging with novels both at school and at home to create a long-lasting relationship with both fiction and non-fiction.
