Immigrant Identities and Future Goals: Challenges of Gifted Students in Transition

Gifted immigrants face a range of cultural and academic challenges transitioning into new systems that ignore their unique abilities, talents, and social-emotional needs. A grant-funded project for underserved immigrant gifted students in Florida focuses on integrating personal strengths, career readiness mindsets, and behavior into the core curriculum. Differentiated affective teaching strategies address their transitional identities, needs, placements, and counseling.

Learning Objectives:

  • Strategies to integrate the gifted immigrant experience into their personal profiles and educational plans and placements in terms of student social-emotional strengths and needs.
  • Strategies to integrate personal vision, identity, and career development into the core curriculum in terms of the principles, goals, and activities relevant for diverse gifted learners who are immigrants.
  • Collaborative support and systems to engage teachers, counselors, and school psychologists to address the social-emotional challenges of immigrant students experiencing trauma and in crisis.
