How do we prevent expectations, internalized by profoundly gifted (PG) youth, from leading to negative outcomes? Extremely high expectations may serve to motivate or alternately paralyze PG learners. Based on phenomenological research about PG underachievement, this session works to prevent the internalization of unreasonable expectations that later manifest as social, emotional, and motivational issues.
Learning Objectives:
Gain a better understanding of the spectrum of struggles underachieving PG students face in real life (including expectations, social pressures, mental health, and variously motivating/de-motivating stresses).
Learn strategies to scaffold for resilience development in PG youth, addressing both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors.
Workshop realistic examples to troubleshoot ineffective interventions while filling teachers’ tool boxes with practical approaches
