Developing talent in the arts requires deliberate cultivation of not only artistic abilities but also psychosocial skills to tackle obstacles and cope to reach exceptionally high goals. In this session, we discuss the important role of psychosocial skills in the development of artistic talent and share practical strategies teachers and mentors can implement to cultivate such skills in artistically-talented students.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will learn and apply principles of performance psychology to strengthen psychosocial skills so that artistically talented students can achieve at high levels.
Participants will be able to use strategies that support students in maintaining composure, reappraising failure, and channeling motivation into long-term commitment.
Participants will be able to reflect on how these strategies build adaptive coping skills for students facing the pressure to perform and achieve at high levels in the arts.
