Few studies focus on gifted students whose academic experiences are impacted by traumatic brain injuries (TBI). However, as more children are diagnosed with TBI each year, educators need to better understand how to serve this Twice-Exceptional (2e) population. This poster presents an overview of the challenges faced by 2e students with TBI and provides suggestions for supporting these learners.
Learning Objectives:
Develop an awareness of the exceptional needs of students with TBI and the ways in which those needs manifest in classroom settings.
Understand how the “masking” process can result in 2e students with TBI being underserved (either by not receiving gifted or special education services that target strengths or areas of need).
Learn instructional strategies and scaffolding processes for meeting the needs of 2e students with TBI across a variety of K-12 classroom contexts.
