Associate Indigenous Students Leap Ahead (ISLA) Project, Massachusetts
Gifted Native American children are grossly under-identified and under-served in the U.S. Over 42% of those gifted children are lost every year. The European values of our programs are uniquely unsuited for gifted Native American kids, whose cultures value collaboration and community success over individual excellence. Come explore a new path with proven results. Find a new definition of giftedness.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will examine visual evidence from classroom videos that demonstrates the efficacy of using non-European methods of non-verbal identification and programming respectful of tribal culture and Elders' wisdom.
Recognizing the inadequacy of percentile metrics on written instruments for identification of Native American gifted students and resulting gaps in instructional programming, attendees will grapple with new conceptions of giftedness.
With assistance from the presenters, attendees working in small groups will collaborate using the tools of cultural respect, place, and visual-spatial learning to design gifted lesson plans for next week.
