Case of the Missing Children: A Case Study Approach to Identify Underserved Gifted Children

Where have the gifted children gone? Unknown. What is suspected? Reliance on traditional approaches for identification and assessment of gifted children. Follow one district's initiative to leverage subjective and objective data as clues to identify and uncover the hidden potential of underserved children for gifted programming and services.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how relying on standardized tests for gifted identification has led to some students being undetected, unappreciated, and underserved in gifted programming and services.
  • Identify how this case study opens the door for students to be identified and receive programming/services that match their individual needs as gifted learners.
  • Reflect on Gadsden's journey and determine if your district's current identification/evaluation practices have resulted in "Missing Gifted Children".
