Multi-tiered Systems of Support for Talent Development: A Cross-state Exploration

Several U.S. states and many more school districts have adopted MTSS-based models for serving gifted and advanced students in an attempt to expand access to enrichment, differentiated instruction, and appropriate supports. The goal of this is to frame talent development as a schoolwide responsibility. Hear leaders and scholars share advantages, challenges, and “lessons learned” from experience implementing MTSS-based service models.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify opportunities to leverage transitions to MTSS-based gifted service models to expand the array of services available and increase opportunities for students to accelerate academically.
  • Connect MTSS implementation to opportunities to improve equitable access to and participation in gifted services and other advanced learning options for students from currently underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Critically evaluate local service models for potential gaps in the continuum of services for students with diverse learning needs across the full range of readiness and achievement.
