Nationally-normed behavior scales are commonly used in the gifted identification process, but are they inclusive of the behaviors demonstrated by rural students? This presentation provides an overview of the research regarding normed behavior scales and describes issues and implications relevant to using them for gifted identification of rural students.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will understand the research regarding the use of normed behavior rating scales for gifted identification, including statistical information about nationally-normed scales.
Participants will understand how the specific use of both nationally- and locally-normed behavior scales can either help or hinder identification of gifted students in rural areas.
Participants will understand how gifted personnel in rural areas can utilize the “just-in-time” model to effectively and efficiently manage job responsibilities around behavior scale trainings to support gifted identification.
